Experimental and unpredictable use of materials is borne from a strong will to explore the unintentional and surprising in Pernille Pontoppidan Pedersen’s ceramic works. She seeks a showdown with fixed notions regarding ceramics and lets herself be inspired from all directions, at times with figurative references to objects we all know, or sometimes in purely abstract compositions. The sculptures are either accumulations of seemingly everyday relics with recognizable object parts, or they hint at contemporary existence by means of a powerful and playful manipulation of the soft clay itself, and a love of the plurality of ceramic colors and textures. Pedersen spontaneously embraces the errors inherent in the ceramic process, thriving within the chaos of possibilities. The works are challenging in their equal aspects of ugliness and engaging beauty, and the manner in which they invoke both the familiar and the inexplicable.
