Kati Tuominen-Niittylä (Finnish, b. 1947) is an internationally renowned ceramic artist living and working in Helsinki, Finland where she is a member of the Arabia Art Department Society. Tuominen-Niittylä takes a multi-directional approach to the ceramic medium, alternating between wheel-throwing, casting, and hand-building. She creates works that reference traditional craft with silhouettes reminiscent of functional vessels and basketry – though executed with pure artistic intent. Elegantly thin walled with a rich surface texture, Tuominen-Niittylä’s neutrally hued sculptures exude an architectural lightness that seems to defy the physical world. Her work is in the permanent collections of numerous public institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Finnish State Collections, and the Shigaraki Cultural Park Museum in Japan.
