Marta Palmieri (Italian, b. 1973) is an artist living and working in Senigallia, Italy. Working primarily in cermamic, Palmieri makes sculptures that are seemingly ancient and modern in equal measure. Drawing inspiration from expansive sources; ruins from civilizations past, Italy’s Arte Povera from the 1960s, and ‘70s or brutalist architecture from the post WWII era are all referenced in her work. Often composed from multiple separate elements, each surface treatment is as carefully considered as the compositional elements themselves, by layering glazes, employing etching solutions and oxidation compounds, Palmieri creates rich-toned hues that have appeared to stand the tests of centuries gone by. These individual elements are often placed together in lyrical arrangements of precariously stacked upon one another challenging the viewer’s perceptions of balance and gravity.
