Nicola Tassie (British, b. 1960) is a ceramic artist exploring the intersection of functional vessels with purely artistic forms. Employing centuries-old pottery traditions, Tassie makes works that are immediately recognizable and approachable owing to their clear ties to the domestic objects we encounter in our everyday lives, though closer inspection reveals that the functionality is only alluded to through certain formal properties, not discreetly possible. Tassie leaves no stone unturned in the “addictive” exploration of the medium – frequently alternating between the wheel and hand-building, using a variety of clay bodies and firing techniques to create a body of work ranging in scale and mode of display. Tassie deftly blends the humble dignity of everyday pottery with the more philosophical pursuits typically associated with abstract sculpture striking an elegant balance.
