Press Release

Hostler Burrows will be exhibiting works by Korean ceramicist Jae Won Lee, whose intimately-scaled, reductive, sealed porcelain forms are composed of numerous small, box-like components. Each sculpture is assembled from white and off-white elements. The resulting large, singular unit conveys the sense of a place for contemplation, solitude, simplicity, and silence. Recently, Lee has applied this theme to works on paper and mixed media projects. She has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Lee received a BFA in sculpture from California State University, Long Beach in 1991 and an MFA in ceramics from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1995. She is currently a professor at Michigan State University and has taught at other institutions, including the University of Washington, Seattle; California State University, Long Beach; Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; Camberwell College of Arts in London, UK; and Chung Nam National University, Daejeon, South Korea. She has attended various artist-in-residence programs including at the Clayarch Gimhae Museum, the Archie Bray Foundation, the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Cranbrook Academy of Art, the European Ceramic Work Centre, the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Chung Nam National University, and The Clay Studio, Philadelphia, PA.
