Hostler Burrows is pleased to participate in TEFAF Online, the art fair’s new
digital platform, with a stoneware sculpture Stack(Red Glazed) by Torbjørn Kvasbø.

Torbjørn Kvasbø (Norwegian, b. 1953) is a ceramic artist of international acclaim with a career spanning several decades. Working primarily at monumental scale, his sculptures are an exploration of both his personal boundaries and the physical limitations of the medium. Of his work and practice Kvasbø states “my work process in the clay medium offers a lot of resistance, and it reveals to me the forces over which I have no control – the incalculable elements of my inner being. My emotions and feelings are physically discharged into the work, and they become actual experiences themselves.” Through this transference of mental and emotional energy into physical sculpture, Kvasbø is continuing in the centuries-old tradition of artist as alchemist.

For the past 35 years, Kvasbø has exhibited extensively throughout Scandinavia, Europe, Asia and the United States. His work is held in numerous important public and private collections including the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, Norway; The Sèvres National Ceramics Museum, Paris, France; The National Museum, Stockholm, Sweden; the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu, Japan. Forthcoming solo-exhibitions are planned at the Shanghai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, China (2021); Taoxichuan Museum, Jingdezhen, China (2021); and the CAFA Museum, Beijing, China (2023).

Kvasbø currently serves as President of the International Academy of Ceramics. He lives and works in Venabygd, Norway.
