Biography

portrait

Shozo Michikawa (Japanese, b. 1953) is a ceramic artist based in Seto, Japan where he has maintained a studio since 1975. Michikawa creates expressionist gestural sculptures inspired by nature and steeped in centuries-old ceramic technique. Beginning with traditional wheel-thrown vessels, Michikawa pushes these forms to the brink, scratching and scoring the surface and twisting the structure along an invisible central axis. The resultant works are quietly powerful sculpture with subtle traces of functionality.

Shozo Michikawa has exhibited widely in Japan, Europe and America. His work is included in many important public and private collections.
