Carl Fagerlund was born in Kalmar, Sweden, graduating from the Higher Art Industrial School in Stockholm in 1943. He taught drawing and worked as a lighting architect before starting work at Orrefors Glassworks in 1946. Orrefors was founded in 1898 and created some of the most unique glass treatments for their time.

Fagerlund created light installations for numerous public spaces, including hotels in Copenhagen, the Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde art museum in Stockholm, the Frederiksberg Town Hall in Denmark, the Kiruna Town Hall in Sweden, the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo, the General Motors headquarters in the United States, and the Möllevången Church in Malmö. His work was featured in exhibitions in London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, among other cities.
