Anne Brandhøj (b. 1984, Denmark) is a Danish furniture designer. Brandhøj’s work showcases a masterful approach toward woodworking, where elegant, abstract shapes emphasize the complexity of her chosen medium and juxtaposition runs abound. A trademark formal language that confronts notions of intrinsic function, Brandhøj’s pedestals and shelves are elevated from the utilitarian towards abstract, sculptural visions. A penchant for symmetry further highlights the intricacy of her woodworking.
Combining a variety of timbers into a single piece, such as Douglas fir, ash, Danish cherry, and oak, a certain aesthetic expression of durability and rawness emerges. Brandhøj's work draws attention to themes of consumption and sustainability, working with materials that would otherwise be discarded. Defects within wood, such as knots, splits and pitch pockets, transform into remarkable moments of surface complexity and contrast.
Brandhøj received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in furniture design from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She is a founding partner of Bly Studio, and currently serves as a professor of design at Kunsthøjskolen in Holbæk, Denmark.
